I can’t believe I have now been here for a month! Time is flying by. We are settling in. I located a groomer for Wookie. He will have his first haircut here tomorrow. We made a few exploratory visits this past week via scenic road trips. The weather has been difficult, but we have persevered. I am considering an investment in a rain coat. It is not something that I have ever had in my wardrobe, but I can see it’s value here (I need to find Wookie one, too).
While talking about exploration with some of my colleagues at work, one of them asked if the state of Maine was bigger than the state of Texas. It was asked with genuine sincerity, so it deserved a respectful reply. I answered him that the size of Texas is not distorted on the map (because I could see how someone might think that). Texas is about 8 times bigger than Maine. Base on square kilometers, Texas is 748% larger. It made for an interesting conversation.
We were able to visit the easternmost point of the United States this past week. There happens to be a light house at the same location. It was so incredibly foggy that visibility was poor, but hence the need for a lighthouse, right? The keeper of the visitor center stated that the conditions were normal for them, so I guess we got to see it in it’s natural element. I was wishing for a dry, sunny day so that we could hike the surrounding trails, but not this time. We have now been able to visit the center of the contiguous USA (Lebanon, KS), the southern most tip of the USA (Southpoint, HI), and the easternmost point of the USA (Lubec, ME) during my stent as a travel nurse.
We went to Mount Desert Island this past weekend. It included sight seeing at Cadillac Mountain (highest elevation of the entire eastern seaboard). It is only 1530 feet above sea level, but the summit was so cold! I had read in a blog that it was to be expected, so I wore a hoody, but I forgot to dress Wookie appropriately or inform my husband (he had to purchase a hoody at the gift center to stay warm). We also visited the nearby Thunder hole and Bar Harbor while we were in the area.
Now it’s back to work until next weekend’s adventures.
