Week 4 (Somewhere in the mountains)

It snowed 5 inches on Friday. Beautiful snow, not like the type we get in Texas that melts and turns into mud. Here it just evaporates, leaving no trace behind.

We have began to locate new services here to replace the ones at home. Now that Wookie has a new groomer and I have a new hairstylist/colorist, it feels like we are settling in. Planting little seeds, establishing new little roots so to speak. I can only wonder what it will feel like when we leave here and pluck those up only to find new ones to plant somewhere else. I received a handmade paracord bracelet from an employee today and a crocheted flower from a patient, they are both precious to me and I believe that they are evidence of me being accepted here. I am overwhelmed by their kindness. I can only wonder as well what it will feel like to leave people behind that I have grown close to (leaving my GOAT’s behind in Texas is still fresh on my heart).

Sometimes I catch myself remembering everything that I left behind at home. I miss hearing the chime of my favorite clock. It was my grandfather’s retirement gift from Southwestern Bell and has a gold plate with his name on it. It wasn’t working when I got it, but I took it to a clock guy (what would their official name be?), and it has chimed like “clockwork” ever since. I miss winding it every week, but my husband has assured me that he would keep it going, and I believe he has since I can hear it in the background when we talk in the phone.

I noticed a funny thing happening at work. Maybe I forgot to mention that I packed a weeks worth of lunches and put it in the break room refrigerator on my first day. When I came back on the second day, much of it was missing. The initial response from others was “who took that?”, “who would do that?”, and “we need to find the person that did it”. But I can only suspect that someone got hungry. I remember working those 12 and 16 hour shifts (especially night ones). I always packed food, but sometimes it just wasn’t enough. I would develop the worst hunger pangs in my life about half way through. So, if someone was hungry, I am glad that it was there for their taking. Due to this occurrence, I brought a basket to work filled with snacks (oranges, nuts, popcorn, oatmeal, granola bars, etc). I have continued to restock it every time that I go to the grocery store. The funny thing that happened…. I noticed that someone else started to contribute to it, too. This is how we take care of each other in life. This is how we change the culture at our work place. It doesn’t always have to be a “Who dunnit” to find a solution.

I met my husband in Vegas this past weekend. It was a first time visit for both of us. We have always wanted to visit Las Vegas during the NFR, but never have been able to (maybe next time it will line up). We had a blast despite staying in a hotel that was substandard to say the least. It was one of the well-known casino/hotels and had great photos and descriptions, but was highly misrepresented. It was the first time that I stayed in a hotel with duct tape on the carpet in our room. He wanted to stay at the South Point hotel but they don’t allow dogs. We thought that was strange since they have a horse arena and stalls. So, you can bring your horse but you can’t bring your poodle. Oh well….We didn’t care, though. The pools were fabulous and so was the weather. We couldn’t have asked for more. The Fremont Street Experience was amazing! It was like being transported into an alternative universe. Next time, we will stay at the Circa.

They delivered my propane this week (yay!), but they didn’t connect it (boo!). Luckily I still have enough in the small bottles to last until they do come back to connect it. I hope.
