Week 3 (Somewhere in the mountains)

I started out this past week weary and tired. But it’s not the kind of tired that sleep would cure. I think it is related to the challenges this week along with trying to establish a “new normal”. I think the most difficult part about establishing a new normal is that it requires an acceptance or contentment with the new changes. I struggle with that because there is a part of this that I don’t ever want to accept or be content with -missing my husband. It is really the only struggle that I have right now. I miss his smell. It is a scent that is unique to him and only him.

This might be a good place to insert a little side bar. He thinks I smell like canned corn. Not just corn, but specifically canned corn. I am not proud of this, in fact I am slightly disgusted by it. As a joke in the past, when he would travel, I would sneak a can of corn in his bag for him to find later. He’s not the only one that compares scents, my sister said that her husband thinks she smells like rubber bands, so maybe canned corn isn’t so bad. It also reminds me of an exchange student that lived with us for a while. She said that all Americans smell like butter, which is interesting, too. I actually utilized that comparison in a college essay one time…

Wookie and I have adjusted to the time zone change and are now able to sleep until 0530. We are continuing to adjust to the elevation change. He is now having regular bowel movements, but I still have dyspnea on exertion due to the “thin” air up here. We continue to hike 2-3 times/day, exploring all the trails surrounding us. My step count may easily compete with you these days @Donna B.

Wookie had his first appointment with the new groomer this past week. His mohawk is now cleaned up and he no longer looks like a used poodle (nobody wants a used poodle). He seemed to have tolerated it well even though he has never been to any other groomer except Amanda, back home.

My husband sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers to help me through the melancholy this past week. They seriously brightened up my office and my day. I took a framed family photo to work to place on my desk so that I can look at it frequently for comfort. I can’t help but smile when I see it. I don’t know why I hadn’t done that sooner. I normally have pictures on my desk and diplomas on my wall, but this is just so temporary that I hadn’t considered it. Lesson learned, it has helped immensely.

I also received a beautiful cookie bouquet from my agency recruiter. They were adorable! All dressed up as nurses and doctors. They were delicious, too. I shared them with my nurses and aides, so they actually brightened the day for everyone. So thoughtful and kind! I appreciate you @Wendy Y!

Fun facts: 1. There is a 300 pound pot-belly pig that lives in a camper near me. I see the people walking it several times a day on a leash/harness. The camper has a ramp to the door for it to walk up. 2. The grocery store in town sells liquor with all the accoutrements to make mixed drinks -hella convenient. 3. My hair is falling out in handfuls. I am not sure if it is related to the dry air and the need for a better conditioner, or the bands from the N95 mask that I have to wear on a daily basis. Any suggestions @Avery N?

  1. Your “smells” paragraph had me laughing. Bonnie told me about it this morning so I had to go read right away when I clocked out. I hope I smell like butter to everyone. That is a beautiful smell. What would you rate your stress level? none, mild, moderate, or severe Maybe stress is causing your hair to fall out? I hope not. Stay strong and keep blogging.

    1. Hi Melissa! It could 100% be related to the stress and anxiety r/t the adjustment. But I got great news today!!! Wookie gets to come to work with me!

  2. The hair falling out happened to once when I was in a very stressful situation and hubby was in OH. Maybe love sickness! 😉

  3. This post had me laughing and in better spirits! My last day with our team 🙁 needed a pick me up and you brought it!
